Great getaways to places both near and far! Without exception, our weekly show will deliver superb content with refreshing ideas on where to travel, what's trending in the world of travel - from Canada and the USA, to reaches well beyond the backyard!
With summer behind us and the first day of autumn on our doorstep, thoughts turn to the hectic pace of back to school for many families - while juggling mom and dad's schedules at work, or maybe just how to keep the balance while trying to stay healthy and fit. And with the recent stats of young children - particularly boys between 5 and 11 yrs of age showing symptoms of type two diabetes and heart disease due to an inactive lifestyle reflected by advances in technology - it's time to figure out how to put healthy living at the top of our to do list. Another consideration is how to maintain this lifestyle while travelling, either for business or that long awaited vacation!

Our first show will help set you in the right direction with special guests, Charlene SanJenko of VIBE Personal Vibrancy Lifestyle Management and Donna Van Wallegham, Regional Director, Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Valley for the Canadian Diabetes Association. Charlene shares an inspiring way to look at altering our views on fitness and staying healthy as a lifestyle to ensure we can travel for years to come. Her top three tips for staying healthy while travelling are 1) DRINK WATER...and lots of it 2)KEEP FUELED...with healthy snacks including unsalted dried nuts, protien bars, to a mini snack pack filled with goodies like Greek-style yogurt with fresh fruit slices - apples are excellent and 3) STRETCH FREQUENTLY...Get the wiggles out by stretching - in your airplane seat, to getting up and walking the aisles at least once during your flight. If you're driving, be sure to stop every hour and stretch at a rest stop or by the road. Your body will thank you!
Chelsey and I first marathon - Hawaii 2007
My daughter was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes at the age of 12. Following a week in the hospital, the very first person we met on our journey 'in the real world' was a woman who is still one of our dearest friends in the community of diabetes. Donna Van Wallegham has shared many tips over the years, and always keeps us informed of the valuable and fascinating work being done by Canadian Diabetes Association to help people living with all forms of diabetes to maintain their well-being.
Celebrating 50 years of Camp Kakhamela - located on the Sunshine Coat at Gibsons - children from 9 years up who live with type one diabetes learn how to have fun while being educated on how to live life to the fullest by controlling their diabetes - not the other way around. A great getaway for kids, thanks in part to co-founder, Dr. John Hunt, and the tremendous teams of doctors, nurses and at Canadian Diabetes Association who help bring a camp excursion to so many! As a parent, I can enthusiastically share that the experience is one not to be missed! Best comment I ever heard was from my daughter after her first visit..."Mom, we had so much fun because everyone was the same! We injected insulin together, we tested blood sugars together and if anyone didn't feel well, we all knew how to help them!" Precious words that still resonate.
And it doesn't end with Camp, as whether you have diabetes, or you know a family member or friend who lives with either type of this disease, why not travel the world with Team Diabetes (you can walk, jog or run). My family has been to marathons in Hawaii, Iceland, Brazil and more in support of people who live with this daunting and life-threatening disease.
BC's signature event of the season - Baubles For Banting being held at the gorgeous downtown location of Birks is Thursday, September 27 - tickets are still available if you can make it!
Wrapping our engaging show is Jelena Jado, Regional Sales Manager here in British Columbia with Sears Travel. We are thrilled to be working together once again, to bring exclusive deals and informative travel news to you each and every week!
